In 1973, Cross and Sword was announced by the Florida Legislature as the official state play. Budget constraints forced the authority to stop the show after more than 30 years in 1996. The use of the theatre was very infrequent in the following years with only a few Shakespeare Festivals hosted from 1997 to 2003.
